Usually melons grow best in the South where these nice, consistently hot temps for an extended period of time. But here in the North, we gotta be careful about what types of melons we grow. We need quickly maturing varietys. So I've selected some of my favorite for you, from my favorite seed suppliers.
Minnesota Midget- with a name like this, you know it grows well in our area! Extra-early variety bred by the University of Minnesota at St. Paul in 1948; introduced by Farmer Seed and Nursery Company. Capable of producing two crops—an excellent choice for northern gardeners. Vines seldom over 3' long; suitable for growing in containers. Round 4" fruits have thick golden-yellow flesh that is edible to the rind and deliciously sweet.
Amish- People tend to trust seeds with the name Amish in title for a reason... they're tried and true varieties with great taste quality. Oval fruits are 9" long and weigh 4-7 pounds. Sweet orange flesh is very juicy with full muskmelon flavor and a rather thick rind.
